The Man's latest conspiracy is to keep war hero Gen. That sitcom character named Urkel back in the '80s? Guess who.) The reason Spike Lee doesn't make more movies? The Man. (The NBA three-point rule that, as the movie has it, gives an advantage to white players? The Man. to do battle with a shadowy figure called The Man, whose chief mission is to keep African Americans down. (Undercover Brother was originally the protagonist of an animated Web series created by novelist John Ridley, who co-wrote the screenplay here.)Īlthough UB usually works alone, in "Undercover Brother" he has been enlisted by an underground group called the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D. But in its well-aimed satirical barbs and playful spirit, it's probably a whole lot more effective in making its political points.Įddie Griffin plays the eponymous character, a self-appointed "Robin Hood of the 'hood" whose heroes are the blaxploitation idols of the 1970s. At once a sendup and a celebration of cultural differences, "Undercover Brother" may not have the polemical fire of, say, a Spike Lee film. ![]() The line is supposed to be a throwaway joke, but it gets to the heart of a movie that exaggerates racial boundaries and stereotypes as joyfully as it anticipates their erasure. That's a quote from one of the characters in "Undercover Brother," which may well wind up being the smartest bonehead comedy of the summer. "This is a great day for black people of all races."
